Breast Reconstruction

What is the procedure/How is it performed?

Breast reconstruction implemented after the mastectomy performed due to tumor or another disease is one of the most successful operations of plastic surgery. Today, it is possible to implement these operations with mastectomy simultaneously if medical condition is convenient.

How long does it take?

It takes about two-five hours depending on the technique to be chosen.

What kind of anesthesia is used?

Primary surgery mostly is performed under general anesthesia. Secondary operations could be performed via intravenous sedation.

How long is hospitalization?

It is generally about one-three days.

How does the recovery period progress?

Your recovery could take about six weeks after mastectomy and reconstruction or just flap reconstruction. In prosthesis operation, this period may be shorter.

What are possible risks and undesired results?

General problems of surgery such as bleeding, fluid accumulation  or anesthesia problems could be observed after this operation, as well. However, they are rare. Scar recovery may delay in people who smoke or more scars may appear. Sometimes these problems require a secondary operation. Your new breast may look more solid, round and smooth compared to the other normal breast. It may not have contour before the mastectomy or may not be symmetrical to your other breast exactly. The reconstruction does not enable to gain normal sense; however, in time some sense may emerge.

How are the results?

It has satisfactory results for many patients.
